Great work, Room 408!

Going Public with our Space Research

After we completed our posters and figured out what order the facts should be read, we practiced with our groups.

Then, our 4K friends came up to learn about space.  They rotated between the posters.

Next, we geared up for our formal presentations for our families and other classes.

Room 408 was so proud!

On Monday, we'll look closely at and reflect on all the learning that we collected from our audiences after each presentation.

Silent 'e'

This week our spelling words have to do with the power of the silent 'e'.
There are quite a few videos that the kids enjoyed while learning about this type of spelling pattern. Here are two of our favorites:



We also worked in stations on different silent 'e' activities.

We had lots of fun with silent 'e' this week!

More Little House Connections...

I love showing the kids pictures and videos that help bring Little House in the Big Woods alive for them.
Before reading the 'Dance at Grandpa's' chapter, I shared a video about square dancing with Room 408.

When I was little, we learned how to square dance in gym...many kids today don't even know what square dancing is!  However, Kaylene's family actually held a square dance at their farm and she was able to share her experiences, as well.

In one of the final chapters of the book, Laura writes about the threshing machine that Pa hires to help with the wheat.  Here is the video that I shared with them:

We're already excited to read the next book, Little House on the Prairie!

Creating our Space Posters

Once we had written the facts that we would be teaching, it was time to get started on our posters!
We planned it out with our partners...

...and we started creating!

Finally, we worked on titles with our group.

Jordan's Cat

Jordan got a new cat over Christmas and brought it in to share.

She was pretty wiggly!

Making Butter!

We got to the chapter in Little House in the Big Woods where Ma, Mary, and Laura churn butter.

We predicted how butter was made and then watched a video about making butter the traditional way.

We recorded the ingredients and directions in our Think Books. Then we were ready to begin! We put in a little Taylor Swift (to Shake It Off Up)...

and we were off!

Our muscles got tired, but soon our cream started to thicken.

We had to KEEP shaking!

After a *lot* more shaking, we checked inside our jars.

Once we poured off the liquid, we were ready to spread it on some bread.

We thought it was dee-licious!
