Veterans Day Mini-Inquiry

We knew that we didn't have school on Monday, but many of us didn't know why--we had heard of Veterans Day, but didn't know what it was about.

We made observations and inferred about photographs:

We read magazines to get information:

We researched in books:

We watched videos and during our research we made sure to write down our findings:

We talked about our learning with each other:

We got together as a big group and shared our thinking and research:

We gathered all our learning on one big chart:

We were amazed at everything we learned about Veterans Day!

...it's for all of us!

To top off our inquiry, we had a special guest come in...Lincoln's dad!

His dad is an administrator at the middle school and is on active duty in the army.
He answered a lot of our lingering questions.
He taught us how to salute.
He even had us do some push-ups!

We noticed that the flag on his arm looked backward.

He told us the reason for that is because that's what the flag looks like when it is carried forward into battle.

We sang him our "Thank You, Veterans" song.  We are so thankful that our military is so strong and brave!
