Publishing

This month we spread out all our writing and chose a personal narrative story from our writing workshop folders.  We chose a piece that we could do more work with to make it even better.

We exploded moments in our stories just like the authors did in The Girl on the High Diving Horse and Crab Moon.

After we exploded the most exciting moment in our story, we made sure our stories made sense.  We also read our stories to each other and added parts to make sure any readers' questions were answered.

We also created beginnings that hooked our readers, and endings that let our readers go gently.

When we were done we got the typed copy of our story and we were ready to illustrate.

In the past few weeks we have illustrated our books, designed endpapers, created titles that make others want to read our books, and added blurbs on the back.  If you want to read our books, you'll need to come to the Exploration Celebration on April 20th!

Publishing: Hard Work of Authors in Room 408

In Writing Workshop each student in Room 408 chose one of their favorite pieces to "stick with" for a while, in order to make them even better and get them ready for publishing.  We had to reread our pieces over and over and over to make sure they sounded right after we changed parts and added parts using flaps.  We also realized how helpful it is to have writing partnerships!

Publishing is hard work, but it's worth it!

Getting Published

For the past few weeks we have been working hard to publish our favorite piece of writing.  We spread out all our pieces and tried to pick the one that we liked so much we knew we could make it *even* better.

Our class has been so serious while we work on our publishing.  You can feel the excitement in the air!

We spent time revising and editing.  We revised to choose stronger words and use some craft, like similes and personification, that we noticed authors using.  We also revised our beginnings and endings.  Finally, we edited to make sure we remembered capital letters, ending punctuation, and word wall words.

After revising and editing, we went through some phases of publishing.  We illustrated our pages to make sure that our pictures matched our words.

We have been noticing how other authors made words "pop out" of the page by making them look special.  We decided to do the same thing.

We created our title pages, dedication pages, and even wrote a "blurb" on the back of our book. We used the Croakit app to record our names, titles, and blurbs so that our readers can scan a QR code to hear the author tell about the book!
