Each year Hillcrest & LEADS celebrate the great variety of cultures in our world. Each classroom chooses a culture to study and shares with the whole school.
This was our day to share our Africa research, as well as find out about other cultures.

Our "Field Trip" to Antarctica
This week we're going on an imaginary field trip to Antarctica. We found Antarctica on the globe.
We made measuring tapes and recorded our heights in order to figure out what size snow suit we need.
We read a poem about Rockhopper penguins and listened for important information.
We found out that Rockhopper penguins are about 18 inches tall. We measured out string to record the height of the Rockhopper penguin.
We compared Rockhopper penguin heights to our own heights.
They were pretty tall!
We learned a lot about Antarctica, but we're glad it's spring in Wisconsin!
We watched a video about Antarctica so we'd know what to expect.

Field Trip!
LEADS went to a play at the Weidner and the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary today for our field trip!
We saw the play based on the books by Doreen Cronin: Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Spider, and Diary of a Fly.
We had great weather at the wildlife sanctuary, inside and outside.

Library Field Trip
May has been a month full of field trips! We also went on a field trip to the Shawano County Public Library to find out about the summer reading program.

Petting Zoo!
Every year we get to go on a mini-field trip to the high school to see their Petting Zoo. It's always an exciting time!

Field Trip to the Hwy Dept
We got to go on a field trip to the Highway Department to see all the cool trucks and learn about how they help our county. Plus, we were lucky enough to have Caleb's dad be our tour guide!
So many cool trucks!
We got to see the huge amount of salt that the county uses during the winter.
Trucks, trucks, and more trucks!
At the end of our field trip we even got to step on the scale and predict how much we thought we would weigh.
We weighed about 2700 pounds!
Thanks for a great field trip!

Inquiry!
To help the students get a deeper understanding of inquiry, I shared Mrs. Heins' and my Appalachian Trail experiences.
First, we learned about the four stages of inquiry.
We learned that the first inquiry stage is Immersion, where our brains are like sponges soaking up new information.
When Mrs. Heins and I started thinking about hiking on the Appalachian Trail, we soaked up as much information we could by reading books and watching videos.
The next stage is Investigation, where we search for answers to our lingering questions and record our research so we don't forget it.
Mrs. Heins and I had to research the kind of equipment we needed and figure out what part of the trail we wanted to tackle!
After we Investigate, we Coalesce our learning by thinking about Big Ideas and sorting/categorizing our learning.
Mrs. Heins and I got together and practiced hiking in the woods by her house and discussed the research we had done about the equipment for the trail. We even practiced with our equipment!
Finally, we Go Public with our learning by sharing our new schema with others and creating visuals to help us teach.
Mrs. Heins and I went on our hike! We hiked most of the Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trail! We were so proud!
This past summer we visited the trail again and hiked in the Smoky Mountains.
