Thinking about Five & Ten

Today we have been doing some deep thinking about five and ten.

We keep track of our BEAK awards on a ten frame.

Our calendar cards have us noticing groups of ten and double ten frames.

Today we played a matching game and matched "ten and more" equations with double ten frames.

We ended the day in math workshop by making our very own number racks to help us when we work with numbers.

This is what they looked like when they were finished!  We were proud of our hard work!

We were excited to play the game "Show Me" with our number racks.

We learned that we can show numbers in lots of different combinations!

What are some different ways you could show the number 9 on a number rack?

Popsicle Inquiry

In math we have been doing a mini-inquiry with twin pops.

We made paper twin pops.

Twin pops can help our brains grow!  We made a chart to study counting by 2s, because each twin pop has two sticks.

We added The Popsicle Chant to our Poetry Notebooks.

We looked for patterns on our popsicle chart.

We noticed counting by 2s patterns on a number line because each twin pop has two sticks...

We also graphed the most popular popsicle flavors.

We solved the challenging math problem:  If we each ate a twin pop and put our sticks in a bucket, how many sticks would we have altogether?  We used math manipulatives to help us solve the problem.

Of course, we had to eat popsicles to find the answer!!!

We had 11 people eating popsicles, so that made 22 sticks!

Yum! What is your favorite popsicle flavor?

Hopes & Dreams

We started talking about our Hopes & Dreams for first grade by reading a book about Philipe Petit called The Man Who Walked Between The Towers.
You can reread the book here:

Room 612 was surprised to find out that this was a true story!
Here is the newscast from that morning back in 1974.

Here is a more recent video in which we hear more of the story behind Philippe Petit.

Philipe had a dream to walk on a high wire between the Twin Tower buildings, and he didn't stop until he had accomplished his dream.

We will have our Hopes & Dreams conferences this fall.  Parents, teachers, and students will be sharing our Hopes & Dreams with each other.

What are your Hopes & Dreams?
