All year long as we study people from different time periods I have been hearing the question, "Was this before or after ____?" We compare times like, "Philippe Petit walked on the wire between the Twin Towers the year Mrs. Henning was born" or "This was before Laura Ingalls was born." We have our class learning timeline along our number and weather line in our classroom, but now we have created a new timeline that shows all the people we have studied along a continuum.
It also gave us a math opportunity to compare numbers in the 1000s, as we had to compare Christopher Columbus sailing in 1492 with Jane Goodall in the 1960s.
Everyone thought it was pretty challenging, but we worked hard and got smarter!
