Brain Day

Today we had a lot of discussions about our brain.  We learned that our brain has three main parts:
We learned about our "Take a Break" spots and our "Safe Zone" in our classroom where we can sit, breathe, refocus and come back ready to learn.  We practiced taking breaks quickly and quietly so we don't interrupt the learning of others.
We talked about how one strategy to help calm ourselves is to just breathe.

Mrs. Going also came to talk to us about our neurons and how we can help them grow.  We learned that when we learn a new skill, the new connection between our neurons is weak (Shealee and Grady are representing neurons and the weak connection was represented by a thin string).

Next, we learned that the more we practice, make mistakes, and try hard, our neuron connections grow stronger (represented by a thicker string)....

...and stronger (represented by an even thicker string)....

We even go to see real neurons making connections as documented in a brain scan.

What kind of neural connections are you hoping to strengthen this year?
