Africa

Hillcrest & LEADS students celebrated Culture Day this month.  Each classroom chose a culture to study and share.  Classroom doors throughout the building were decorated with learning about different cultures.

Our classroom chose to study different cultures in Africa.  We started by immersing ourselves in lots of different books about African culture.

We especially loved reading the Anansi tales...stories about the trickster spider in African tales.

We also read a book about the places, people, animals, and life in Africa.

An eye-opening book was definitely The Water Princess.

We realized that many people in our world do not have access to water.
Here is the story behind the book.

Here is a read aloud video of the book.

Next, we each chose a flag of an African country to post on our classroom door.

Finally, we read the book Galimoto.

It's a story of a young African boy who gathered wire to create a plaything.  We drew our own plans, and created our own galimoto out of pipe cleaners.

Here is a video of our galimoto experience!
